Many areas in Africa lack electricity, literacy rates vary, and language barriers can limit understanding. To overcome these obstacles, our South-Africa office introduced using the MegaVoice solar-powered audio players. These small but powerful devices have been life-changing, particularly in remote and rural areas where access to Christian resources is scarce.
Charged by solar power, they bring Derek’s teachings to life in a format that can be used anywhere, anytime. Each MegaVoice player costs less than 1,000 rand (around $50 USD), but its impact is priceless.
We have distributed over 300 MegaVoice players in 13 countries, loaded with 400 hours of Derek’s teachings in English.
These players reach a wide range of people, from lay pastors and Bible school students to prisoners and members of isolated communities.
Hearing the Word of God
In Botswana, Thato shared his experience:
“The MegaVoice player has been a blessing, especially for those of us in rural areas where we rely on solar power. Living on a farm without electricity, I would charge my player daily and listen to Derek’s teachings. It helped me face struggles and find answers. I even lent it to farm workers, though some couldn’t understand the language. I’m so grateful that translations are now making this possible for even more people.”
In Malawi, the Iris Ministries Bible school has incorporated Derek’s Foundations teachings into their training for pastors. Through the MegaVoice players, pastors are learning the foundational teachings in Chichewa. To date, they’ve trained thousands of pastors, resulting in over 100 new churches, each one bringing hope to communities through the Gospel.
In Mozambique, the MegaVoice Players are used by YWAM for their pastors’ training program. Pastors will commit one day a week to study using the solar player. One day a month, they gather in groups of about 10, to discuss what they have learned this month and they all prepare a sermon for church, based on this teaching. Churches quickly get to hear good biblical sermons, covering the basics of Christianity. We also send them the printed versions of all the materials with the solar units, as often people learn to read by following the words as they hear them on the recording.
These MegaVoice players have also proven invaluable to people with disabilities. For instance, they are used at a home for the blind in Cape Town, bringing Derek’s teachings to those who otherwise couldn’t access them. We’ve distributed players to blind and partially sighted individuals across the region, allowing them to hear and learn from God’s Word in a way that is meaningful and accessible.
Recently, we received a request from a group of pastors to send them 50 players. These pastors minister in 8 townships in the area of Johannesburg, serving about 1 million people. They have Bible Study groups that will benefit from Derek’s teaching, and we were able to provide the first 10 players to them.
